gematria is a system of assigning numerical values to words or phrases, usually for the purpose of finding hidden meanings in the text. The system can be traced back to ancient times and various different cultures, from Ancient Greece and Rome to Judaism and Islamic mysticism, with some tracing its origins even further back. Gematria is a mystical practice that many believe can reveal hidden truths and connect the physical world with deeper spiritual dimensions.
In general, each letter in a language is assigned its own numerical value, which would then be used to calculate the value of the words or phrases. For example, each letter in Hebrew is given its own numerical value based on its position in the alphabet starting from 1 for Aleph and progressing up through 22 for Tav. And while some groups may have slight variations on this system, as well as additional symbols that would also hold standard value assignments, this is essentially how many cultures use gematria today.
Some proponents of gematria believe that when applied correctly to text it can offer profound insights into the deeper spiritual meanings behind the words used — although much like any form of divination interpretation becomes subjective. For example translating a verse from the Bible into gematria could bring out certain underlying qualities within certain words or even help support an earlier argument made elsewhere in scripture; however to others this may make no sense at all due its highly ethereal nature.
Aside from being used for divination purposes, gematria can be used as part of numerology readings where meanings are linked to dates & numbers or similar tools such as astrology & tarot cards. By using gematria one can identify patterns within their life or circumstances which may provide guidance & understanding towards future decisions — though again opinions will still vary by individual & need towards such methods of insight seeking.
